National Standards for Grade Levels 9-12
Osmosis and diffusion are essential concepts in understanding cell structure and function. Students use starch and glucose solutions and dialysis tubing to model the exchange between water and solutes across cellular membranes. The three experiments require two one hour lab periods on consecutive days. These activities are ideal for supporting high school biology classes at any level and make a nice introduction to cellular transport. Includes a discussion of the Morse Equation for relating osmotic pressure, solute concentration, and temperature. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four.
